Bilges are the lowest part of a ship's hull, located on either side of the keel. Synonyms for this term might include the terms bilge-bays, compartments or tanks, all of which might be used to refer to the watertight spaces below deck level on a vessel. Other similar terms that might be used to describe the bilges could include hold, cargo hold or storage space, as these locations also exist within the hull of a ship and are often used for the storage of goods or equipment. Additionally, the term scuppers might be used to describe the drainage system used to remove water from the bilges and keep them dry.
