Gray hepatization is a medical term used to describe a pathological condition of the lungs where the normally spongy tissue becomes firm and more solid, similar to the texture of liver tissue. It often accompanies bacterial pneumonia and is characterized by the accumulation of white blood cells, red blood cells, and fibrin within the alveoli, the small air sacs of the lungs. Other synonyms for gray hepatization include fibrinous pneumonia, stage II pneumonia and red hepatization, which describes a later stage of the condition where the affected lung tissue turns red due to the accumulation of red blood cells and denatured hemoglobin. Both terms refer to the same disease progression in patients with pneumonia.
