The Hawaiian dollar, also known as the Hawaiian peso, was the official currency of the Kingdom of Hawaii from 1847 until 1898 when it was annexed by the United States. It was also referred to as a Haole dollar, Haole being a Hawaiian term for a foreigner or outsider. Other possible synonyms for Hawaiian dollar could include the Kala, or simply the Hawaiian currency. While no longer in use today, the Hawaiian dollar played an important role in the economic history of Hawaii during a time of significant change and cultural exchange.
