Ilex vomitoria, commonly known as yaupon, is a species of holly native to the southeastern United States. It's an evergreen shrub or small tree that grows up to 20 feet in height. Besides its scientific name, yaupon is also referred to as cassina or Indian holly, due to its historic use by Native Americans. Other synonyms for Ilex vomitoria include Appalachian tea, Carolina holly, and yerba del pasmo. The plant is often used as an ornamental shrub due to its attractive foliage and berries. In addition, yaupon leaves have caffeinated properties and have been traditionally used to make tea.
