Metencephalon is a term used in neuroscience to refer to the hindbrain region of the developing central nervous system. Synonyms for metencephalon include the cerebellum, pons, and rhombencephalon. The cerebellum is responsible for motor coordination, balance, and muscle tone. The pons contains tracts that connect the cerebellum to the rest of the brain, as well as nuclei involved in respiration, sleep, and facial expression. The rhombencephalon is divided into two parts, the metencephalon and the myelencephalon, with the former closest to the spinal cord and responsible for certain motor and sensory functions.
