MIG is an abbreviation for Metal Inert Gas welding, a commonly used welding process. However, there are several synonyms for MIG welding that are often used interchangeably. One such synonym is gas metal arc welding (GMAW), which uses a wire electrode and a shielding gas to produce a high-heat arc. Another synonym for MIG welding is wire-feed welding, which refers to the process of feeding a spool of wire into the welder to join two pieces of metal.
