A railyard is a large area where trains are parked, maintained, and repaired. Besides, it is also known as a train yard, rail yard, or railway yard. It is a terminus for trains and a storage space for freight cars, locomotives, and passenger cars. Synonyms for railyard include marshaling yard, railroad depot, switchyard, and shunting yard. A marshaling yard is used mainly for the classification and sorting of train cars. A switchyard, on the other hand, serves as a junction where trains are turned, and separated according to the destination they are heading. Shunting yard is a small railyard that is used for re-arranging railway wagons, assembling trains and making space for others to pass by.
