A "salt-pit" refers to a natural or artificial basin filled with saltwater. It can also refer to a place where salt mines are located, or where salt is extracted from seawater. There are several synonyms for "salt-pit" including brine pool, saline lake, salt marsh, salt flat, and salt pan. A brine pool is a small body of water with a high concentration of salt and minerals. Saline lakes are large bodies of water with high salt content, such as the Dead Sea. Salt marshes are coastal wetlands where salt-tolerant plants grow in saline water. Salt flats and salt pans are areas where salt is formed as a result of water evaporation.
