Tapirus bairdii, commonly known as the Baird's tapir or the Central American tapir, is a large, herbivorous mammal found in Central America. It is one of four species of tapir in the world and is listed as endangered due to habitat loss, hunting, and fragmentation. The Baird's tapir is also known as the mountain cow, danta, or tapir centroamericano in Spanish. In Belize, it is referred to as the macho de monte or the kabayo de monte. However, regardless of what it is called, the conservation of this species requires global attention and efforts to preserve its natural habitat and reduce hunting.
