Tay Sachs Disease is a genetic disorder primarily affecting the nervous system, and is caused by a deficiency of an enzyme called hexosaminidase A. This results in the build-up of a fatty substance called GM2 ganglioside in the brain and nerve cells. This disease is also known as GM2 gangliosidosis, or simply Tay Sachs. Other synonyms for this disease include infantile gangliosidosis, infantile GM2 gangliosidosis, and hexosaminidase A deficiency. There is currently no cure for this disease, and treatments are limited to providing supportive care and managing symptoms.
