The union of Serbia and Montenegro was a political union that existed from 2003 until 2006, when Montenegro declared independence. There are several synonyms for this term, including the State Union of Serbia and Montenegro, the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia, and the FR Yugoslavia. The union was established following the breakup of the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia, with the goal of maintaining a close relationship between Serbia and Montenegro.
