How to use "Afrikaans" in context?
Afrikaans is a Dutch-based language spoken in South Africa, Namibia, Botswana, Zimbabwe, Swaziland and Mozambique. It is also used as a lingua franca in Lesotho and is the mother tongue of about 2 million people in South Africa.
Afrikaans evolved out of Dutch in the seventeenth century, when the Dutch East India Company began trading in the region. Afrikaans quickly became the language of the white settlement and commercial classes. In the twentieth century, Afrikaans became the first language of blacks in South Africa and became the primary language of the black majority.
