Becker Muscular Dystrophy (BMD) is a genetic disorder that leads to muscular weakness and wasting. It is caused by a mutation in the genes responsible for the production of a protein called dystrophin. There are several other terms used interchangeably with BMD, including Becker's dystrophy, BMD, and muscular dystrophy, Becker type. While BMD shares some characteristics with Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy (DMD), it has a milder course and a slower rate of progression. Like DMD, BMD affects the muscles that control movement, and although there is no cure for BMD, treatments such as physical therapy, occupational therapy, and medication can help manage symptoms.
