Blue Green Algae, also known as Cyanobacteria, are aquatic microorganisms that possess photosynthetic pigments and exhibit a bluish-green coloration. These microorganisms are found in freshwater and marine environments as well as in hot springs and soil. Some of the synonyms used for Blue Green Algae include Cyanophytes, Blue Green Bacteria, and Blue Green Slime. Another term that is used interchangeably with Blue Green Algae is Pond Scum. Despite its negative connotation, Pond Scum is a common term for any type of algae that grows in still water bodies, including Blue Green Algae. Cyanobacteria and Blue Green Algae are sometimes confused with true algae; however, they are actually more closely related to bacteria in terms of genetics and cell structure.
