Catheterization is a medical procedure where a catheter is inserted into a patient's body to either drain fluids or maintain unobstructed body functions. There are several other synonyms for catheterization. Urinary catheterization, urological catheterization, or simply catheterization for urinary tract infections. Intravenous catheterization involves inserting a catheter into a vein and is commonly used to draw blood samples, administer medications, or fluids. Arterial catheterization is the insertion of a thin, flexible tube into an artery to measure blood pressure or collect blood samples. Cardiac catheterization involves inserting a catheter into the heart to diagnose or treat heart conditions. Lastly, nasogastric catheterization involves the insertion of a catheter through the nose into the stomach for enteral feeding.
