Copperheads were a political movement during the American Civil War who opposed the Union's efforts and policies. They were named after the venomous snake that has copper-colored scales on its head. However, there are many synonyms for Copperheads that are equally as valid. Some of these include Peace Democrats, Butternuts, Doughfaces, Loyalists, and Southern Oppositionists. In addition, Copperheads could also be referred to as anti-war democrats, radical republicans, or confederate sympathizers. These various terms were used to describe those who opposed the Union's policy, and their use depended on the context and the person's political leanings. Despite the different names, Copperheads were a significant force during the Civil War and their influence is still felt today.
