Deaf-mutism is a condition where an individual experiences both loss of hearing and speech. However, the term "deaf-mutism" is considered outdated and offensive in contemporary usage. To avoid offending individuals with this condition, other synonyms have been suggested. Some of these include, "deafness and speechlessness", "hearing and speech impairment", "auditory and oral communication difficulty". Still, more inclusive terms have been introduced, such as "deaf and hard-of-hearing" and "non-speaking disabled individuals". The importance of sensitive language in describing disabilities cannot be overemphasized, as they assist in breaking down stereotypes and negative perceptions associated with such conditions.
