Despotically is derived from the Ancient Greek word despotes, meaning "one who wields absolute power." The Oxford Dictionary defines despots as "a ruler or chief who exercises absolute authority over a particular group of people." In practice, despots are often tyrants who suppress any form of dissent or opposing voices. As such, despots are often considered to be the enemies of freedom.

Despite their reputations, some despots have been legendary figures who have made significant contributions to their societies. However, most despots have been ruthless abusers of their power, ruling over their subjects with an iron fist.
