Domatium was a term used to describe the any of a group of small, self-sufficient villas built by the Roman nobility. The term became synonymous with luxurious living and was used to describe estates that could accommodate as many as sixty to one hundred residents. Existing before the inception of Roman civilization, domatia were the first form of rural settlement to be created in Italy. Their construction and maintenance coincided with the flowering of Roman culture. Domatia were constructed ofgrey or yellowstone stone, with barrel roofed walls and intricate tiled roofs.
