Dracunculiasis is a parasitic infection that is also known as Guinea worm disease. The disease is caused by a nematode worm called Dracunculus medinensis. This disease has several synonyms or alternative names which include Medina worm disease, fiery serpent disease, serpent worm disease, and dragon worm disease. Interestingly, these synonyms highlight the worm's physical appearance and the intense pain felt by the infected individual. Dracunculiasis is mainly contracted through drinking contaminated water and mostly affects people living in rural areas of Africa and Asia. Despite eradication efforts, the disease remains active in some countries, causing considerable pain and suffering for its victims.
