Encephalitis is a medical condition that is characterised by inflammation of the brain. In medical terms, encephalitis can be referred to by several different synonyms such as cerebral inflammation, brain inflammation or simply inflammation of the brain. Some other lesser-known alternatives to the word encephalitis include cerebromeningitis, cerebritis, encephalomyelitis and myelencephalitis. Although, these synonyms are not commonly used they do provide a more technical description of the condition. Regardless of the term used, encephalitis is a serious condition that requires prompt medical attention as it can result in permanent brain damage if not treated promptly.
