False memory syndrome is a psychological disorder wherein a person has a distorted or fabricated recollection of a past event. Synonyms for this condition include memory distortion, memory illusion, and memory confabulation. These terms all describe the way that people can sometimes recall a memory in a way that is not accurate, making it seem as though something happened that didn't. Other words that have been used to describe this phenomenon include memory error, memory anomaly, and memory delusion. These terms all describe the same basic problem, which is the way that our memory can sometimes play tricks on us, leading us to remember things that never actually happened.
