Pronunciation: [fˈamɪli hˈa͡ɪpəɹˌɒdəntˌɪdiː] (IPA)

The Family Hyperodontidae is a small family of mammals that are mostly found in Southeast Asia. These animals are also known as "tenrecs" due to their physical similarities with hedgehogs, shrews, and moles. However, they are not in any way related to these creatures as they belong to a completely different family. Hyperodontidae is also commonly referred to as the "otter shrew" family because of their elongated body shape which resembles that of otters. Other synonyms that have been associated with this family include "giant tenrecs", "spiny hedgehogs", and "hedgehog tenrecs". Interestingly, the Family Hyperodontidae is one of the few mammalian families that are endemic to Madagascar.
