Family Synodontidae is a family of very small synodontid toothfish. The family contains two genera, Synodus and Pseudohydrachus. The two genera are separated by a vast amount of diversity, with Pseudohydrachus containing the vast majority of species. There are currently thirteen known species of synodontid toothfish in the family.
The family is endemic to the southern and southeast Atlantic Ocean, including the Cape Verde Islands and the Gulf of Guinea. Most of these species inhabit depths of around 100 to 1,000 meters.
