The Hmong are an ethnic group originating from the mountainous regions of South China, Vietnam, Laos and Thailand. They are also known by many different names, including the Miao, Mien, and Meo. Each of these names refers to subsets of the Hmong population, divided both geographically and linguistically. The term Hmong is often used to refer to the largest Hmong subgroup, who predominantly reside in Laos. However, in Vietnam, the Hmong are known as the Mong, and in China, they're called the Miao. Similarly, Meo is a name used exclusively for Hmong people of Northern Thailand. Overall, the diversity of these different names reflects the rich and complex history of the Hmong people.
