Krabbe Disease is a rare genetic disorder that affects the nervous system and can lead to progressive neurological impairment. It is also known as globoid cell leukodystrophy, Galactosylceramidase Deficiency, and GLD. The disease is caused by a deficiency of an enzyme called galactosylceramidase, which is essential for the breakdown of certain fats in the body. Symptoms of Krabbe Disease typically appear in infancy and can include muscle weakness, seizures, developmental delays, and vision and hearing loss. While there is no cure for Krabbe Disease, treatments such as gene therapy and bone marrow transplantation can help alleviate symptoms and slow the progression of the disease.
