Laserdiscs were a popular form of home video entertainment during the 1980s and 1990s. Now largely obsolete due to the popularity of digital formats, laser discs were a staple of many movie collections. The term "laservision" was often used interchangeably with laserdisc, as was "video disc" and "optical videodisc". These synonyms came from the technology used to create the discs, which used a laser to read and write data to its surface. Other creative names for the discs include "LD" and "Lumivision", which were both popular terms among collectors. While the discs may no longer be in use, their historical significance and contribution to the evolution of home video technology cannot be denied.
