Mari language is an indigenous language spoken by the Mari people in Russia. It is also known as Meadow Mari or Eastern Mari. Other synonyms for the Mari language are Hill Mari or Western Mari. Though the two dialects differ from each other in terms of grammar, vocabulary and pronunciation, both the dialects are recognized as separate languages. Additionally, the Mari language is sometimes referred to as Cheremis, which means "bears" in Russian, as the Mari people share their habitat with bears. The Mari language is an endangered language and efforts are being made to preserve and promote it.
