A neurilemoma, also known as a schwannoma, is a benign tumor that arises from the Schwann cells of the peripheral nervous system. The term "neurilemoma" was coined in the 1930s as a synonym for schwannoma. Other synonyms for this type of tumor include neurinoma, schwannian fibroma, and Verocay body tumor. These tumors can occur anywhere in the body, but are most common in the head, neck, and extremities. They are usually slow-growing and asymptomatic, but can cause pain, numbness, and weakness if they compress nearby nerves.
