Neurofibromatosis Type II, commonly referred to as NF2, is a rare genetic disorder that affects the nervous system. It is characterized by the development of benign tumors on the nerves that control hearing and balance, as well as the spinal cord. These tumors, known as schwannomas, can cause hearing loss, tinnitus, and difficulty with balance and coordination. Other symptoms include vision problems, facial weakness, and headaches. Synonyms for Neurofibromatosis Type II include bilateral acoustic neurofibromatosis and central neurofibromatosis. While there is currently no cure for NF2, treatments such as surgery, radiation therapy, and hearing aids can help manage symptoms and improve overall quality of life.
