Platelet Storage Pool Deficiency (PSPD) is a rare inherited blood disorder characterized by the absence or malfunction of platelet granules that are responsible for proper blood clotting. The symptoms of PSPD can include easy bruising, excessive bleeding, and delayed wound healing. The disorder is also known as Dense Granule Deficiency, Storage Pool Disease, or Gray Platelet Syndrome. These terms describe the same condition but with slight variations in the way the platelets are affected. Diagnosis and treatment of PSPD involves genetic testing, blood transfusions, and medication to encourage the production of platelets. While PSPD is a serious condition, with proper treatment and management, most individuals with the disorder can live normal lives.
