Positive-sense single-stranded RNA viruses can also be referred to as (+)ssRNA viruses or simply positive RNA viruses. These viruses have a genome that is made up of a single-stranded RNA molecule that can be directly translated into proteins by host cells. Other synonyms for these viruses include non-segmented RNA viruses, because their genome is not divided into distinct segments, and cytoplasmic RNA viruses, because they replicate and assemble in the cytoplasm of host cells. Some examples of positive RNA viruses include human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), hepatitis C virus (HCV), and coronaviruses such as severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2).
