A predella is a panel or series of panels located below the main image of an altarpiece. This area is often used to depict scenes from the life of the primary figure(s) in the main image. Other terms that can be used to describe a predella include the term "predelle," "antependium" or "subpanel." "Predella" comes from the Italian word "predella," which means "little step." The function of a predella was to bring the altarpiece closer to the viewer, giving greater emphasis to the images depicted there. While the term predella is mostly associated with Italian art from the 14th century onwards, there are many examples of predellas in use from other cultures and times as well.
