A proa is a small, single-hulled boat that traditionally uses a crab claw sail. In other parts of the world, similar types of boats may be known by different names. For example, in the Philippines, a similar boat is called a banca. In the Marshall Islands, a proa is known as a wa. In Micronesia, it is referred to as a tipnol or tipnol sakman. Additionally, there are several variations of the proa that have slight differences in design and construction, such as the Chamorro sailing canoe known as a sakman and the Polynesian outrigger canoe known as a vaʻa. Despite their differences, these boats all share a heritage of seafaring and skilled craftsmanship that has been passed down for generations.
