Rift Valley fever is a viral infection caused by the RVF virus which is mainly found in animals such as domestic livestock (cattle, goats, and sheep) and wild animals. The disease is transmitted to humans through contact with infected animal blood, tissues, or body fluids. Symptoms of rift valley fever include fever, muscle pains, and headaches which are similar to flu-like symptoms. The infection can be severe in some cases leading to hemorrhagic fever, retinitis, or encephalitis. The synonym for rift valley fever includes RVF, African fever, and mosquito-borne hemorrhagic fever. The disease is common in sub-Saharan Africa and also present in countries of the Middle East.
