The ruscaceae (Fig. 1) are a family of about 244 genera and 10,000 species of flowering plants, including many important agricultural plants. The vast majority of these are native to the tropics and subtropics, but some are widely distributed in temperate regions as well. The family is diverse botanically, with a wide range in shapes and sizes of fruits and flowers, and a considerable range in plastid DNA sequence diversity. The family is monophyletic and the majority of the genera have been placed in Ruscaceae based on morphological and DNA sequence similarities.
