The saimiri is a critically endangered fish endemic to the Ishikawa Prefecture in Japan. The species is only found in two streams, Yamanashi and Ibaraki, that flow through wooded mountainous areas. The saimiri was once abundant in these streams, however, overfishing and habitat destruction caused its population to decline by 87% between 1991 and 2005. In 2013, the population of saimiri was estimated to be around 100 individuals.
