Saintpaulia, commonly known as African violet, is a popular houseplant with delicate, velvety leaves and beautiful blooms. While African violet is the most common name for Saintpaulia, there are a few other synonyms used to describe this plant. Some people refer to it as the Cape Primrose, due to its resemblance to the Primrose flower from Cape Province in South Africa. Others call it the Blue African Violet, as some varieties have blue or purple flowers. Violet Saintpaulia is also sometimes used, as well as the Bantu violet, named after the Bantu people who live in East and Southern Africa where the plant is native.
