Sitka, AK is a resort town on the southeast coast of Alaska that was founded in 1887 by Alexei Petrovich Sitka. Sitka became a Russian penal settlement in 1858 and was expanded in 1870 as a military post. The town came under American control as a result of the Treaty of Paris following the American Civil War, and was transferred to the State of California in 1884. Sitka became a municipality of the City and Borough of Sitka in 1907.
