Thyromegaly is a medical term that defines the swelling of the thyroid gland. The condition is commonly referred to as enlarged thyroid gland. However, there are several other synonyms for thyromegaly which include goiter (when the cause is unknown), multinodular goiter (multiple nodules), toxic goiter (excess hormone production), or Graves' disease (autoimmune disease). Other terms used to describe thyromegaly includes hyperthyroidism (overactive thyroid), hypothyroidism (underactive thyroid), and subclinical hyperthyroidism (mild overactivity). As the thyroid gland is an integral part of the endocrine system, early detection and proper treatment of thyromegaly is necessary for the prevention of associated complications.
