Vanity publisher is a term used to describe companies or individuals who publish books at the author's expense. There are different synonyms for vanity publisher such as self-publishing, assisted publishing, hybrid publishing, subsidy publishing or partnership publishing. Self-publishing refers to an author publishing their own work with little to no assistance from a publisher. Assisted publishing is when an author works with a company to release their book, but the author retains control and ownership of the work.
