White matter disease is a term used to describe various conditions that impact the white matter in the brain. This can include leukoaraiosis, subcortical vascular dementia, Binswanger's disease or cerebral small vessel disease. Although these conditions may differ in the way they affect the brain, they all have one thing in common: damage to white matter. Other terms used interchangeably with white matter disease include white matter hyperintensities or WMHs. These are white matter areas that appear brighter on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans and can indicate damage or injury to the brain. While the terminology may differ, the symptoms and causes of white matter disease remain the same regardless of the name used to describe it.
