Chlorous acid is an inorganic compound with the chemical formula HClO2. Synonyms for chlorous acid include chloric(I) acid, hydrogen chlorite, and hydrogen oxochlorine. It is a weak acid and exists only in solution or as a salt. Chlorous acid is used as a bleaching agent, disinfectant, and reducing agent. It is produced by the reaction of chlorine dioxide and water, and can be further oxidized to form chloric acid. Other related compounds include sodium chlorite and sodium chlorate, which are used in the production of disinfectants and bleaching agents. Despite its importance, chlorous acid and its derivatives are extremely hazardous and must be handled with care.
