The olfactory pit, also known as the nasal cavity, is responsible for detecting scents through the thousands of olfactory receptor cells within the membrane lining the pit. Other synonyms for this anatomical structure include the nasal fossa, nasal chamber, and nasal passage. The nasal cavity is further divided into two portions by a vertical septum, known as the nasal septum. Each of these sections contains thin-walled bones that form intricate passageways for the inhaled air to reach the olfactory receptor cells. In addition to its role in sensing smells, the olfactory pit also filters, humidifies, and warms the air before it enters the lungs.
