Sleep apnea is a common condition that affects millions of people worldwide. It is characterized by periods of interrupted breathing during sleep which leads to poor quality sleep, daytime fatigue, and other health issues. While the term sleep apnea is widely used, there are several synonyms that are often used interchangeably. These include obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), central sleep apnea, and mixed sleep apnea. OSA is the most common form of sleep apnea and occurs when the airway is blocked during sleep. Central sleep apnea is caused by a failure of the brain to signal the muscles to breathe while mixed sleep apnea is a combination of both OSA and central sleep apnea.
