Spikemoss species come in various types, including Selaginella kraussiana, Selaginella plana, Selaginella martensii, and Selaginella involvens, among others. Although they are often called clubmosses, they are not mosses at all, but rather vascular plants. Other synonyms for spikemoss include spike-moss, little pine, and lesser clubmoss, all referring to the narrow, elongated leaves that spike outwards from its stem. The plant is commonly used for ornamental purposes due to its unique appearance and low maintenance requirements. Spikemoss is also used in traditional medicine to treat various ailments ranging from skin conditions and respiratory illnesses to high blood pressure and kidney problems.
