Stilpnomelane is a rare mineral that belongs to the phyllosilicate group. It is a complex iron, manganese, and aluminum silicate that is usually black or brown in color. Some of the synonyms for stilpnomelane include stilpnosiderite, stilpnosiderite-manganiferous, stilpnomelane-manganiferous, and manganostilpnomelane. Stilpnomelane is often found in metamorphic rocks and can be used as a geologic indicator of the conditions under which the rock was formed. It has also been found in hydrothermal veins and as a secondary mineral in ore deposits. Despite its rarity, stilpnomelane has been found in many locations around the world, including in the United States, Canada, Norway, and Russia.
