A winnower is a device or machine that separates grains from their husks. However, there are a plethora of alternative ways to convey this concept using different terms. For example, a separator, straw walker, or a grain cleaner could all be used to describe a winnower. Other synonyms could include a threshing machine, which is used to separate grain from straw, or a chaff cutter, which separates grain from the chaff. Additionally, a grain miller, flail, or scythe could all be used to process grains in a similar way. Regardless of the term used though, the ultimate goal of these machines is to effectively and efficiently separate the husk from the edible grain.
