Desmoid tumors are rare, noncancerous growths that develop from connective tissues in the body. They usually form in the muscles or surrounding tissues of the abdominal wall, shoulder, groin, or thigh areas. These tumors are also known as aggressive fibromatosis, musculoaponeurotic fibromatosis, and fibrosarcoma-like neoplasms. The term "desmoid" originates from the Greek word "desmos," meaning band. It refers to the elongated, fibrous shape of the tumors. Other synonyms for desmoid may include fibrous histiocytoma, fibrous tumor, myoma, fibroblastoma, giant cell tumor of soft tissues, and desmoplastic fibroma. Treatment of desmoid tumors depends on the size and location of the tumor, but it typically involves surgery and radiation therapy.
