Fort Dearborn is a historic fort in Chicago, Illinois built in 1803. It is also known as Fort Du Sable, named after the French trader Jean Baptiste Point Du Sable who founded the settlement which eventually became Chicago. Other synonyms for Fort Dearborn include Chicago Fort, Chicago Garrison, and Dearborn Fortress. The fort played a significant role in the War of 1812 as it was attacked and destroyed by a British and Native American army in 1812. It was later rebuilt in 1816 and remained a military post until 1837. Today, Fort Dearborn is a national historic landmark and is located on the site of the eastern end of the Michigan Avenue Bridge in downtown Chicago.
